ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD
(Calypte Anna)

in North America
Birding Top 500 Counter

STATUS: Anna's Hummingbird is a large hummingbird that is quite at home in suburban areas; some researchers believe that it's recent expansion into the greater Puget Sound area is due in large part to backyard flowers and feeders in the Seattle / Victoria / Vancouver neighborhoods. This species does not migrate in the typical sense, but there is significant dispersal and a retreat from northerly breeding areas in the fall. Some birds banded in southern California have been recaptured in southern Arizona, indicating an eastward dispersal in the fall from that region. Being large and rather cold-hearty, this species has occurred as far north as Anchorage, Alaska (several records), and as far east as northern Georgia in the fall. While long-term research is lacking, current trends show it is now annual in fall / winter in southern Idaho, and will likely continue to colonize southwestern Utah. It's status in Nevada and surrounding regions may be hampered by low human population outside the major metropolitan centers, resulting in fewer birders searching for or noticing hummingbirds (Notice how concentrations of "vagrant" Anna's have been reported from major population centers in the three inland western states -- in Idaho's Boise and Lewiston/Moscow areas, Utah's Salt Lake City area, and Montana's Missoula and Helena areas. An active hummingbird banding program in southwestern Idaho undoubtedly adds to the "awareness" and reports of this species from that region). Continued hummingbird research in the west will certainly expand these limits.
