Idaho Humbanding FUNDRAISERS:

Our personal research on Idaho hummingbirds is self-funded. Travel to and from these sites takes up much of our resources, and we are expanding our network of licensed banders who now need supplies! So we have a few fundraiser-type activities that we promote which help us offset the costs of our work.

One of these is through the sale of Avian Video Center's HOOKED ON HUMMINGBIRDS video in which I had a part, both as advisor and provider of photographic images for the jacket covers and interior portions! See the details below.

We also offer for sale ($50) a framed set of three 4x6 inch hummingbird photos taken by Stacy Jon Peterson (as shown below). These can be shipped to you (email Stacy for shipping charges), or if you're in Boise you can pick up a set at Greg Wardwell's Bird House & Habitat Store (12570 W. Fairview Ave, Boise, Idaho, 208-375-8051).

Remember, it is against US federal and state laws to handle or otherwise interfere with native birds without permits. These in-hand photographs were obtained as documentation for bird banding research projects under appropriate federal and state permits issued to the photographer, Stacy Jon Peterson.

All proceeds from the sale of these photographs directly support Idaho hummingbird research. The bird on the left is Idaho's first state record for Broad-billed Hummingbird (Caldwell, Idaho, May 2004). The middle bird is an immature male Broad-tailed Hummingbird, photographed south of Twin Falls, Idaho, August 2004. The bird on the right is an adult male Rufous Hummingbird, a regular migrant through Idaho, photographed at the Kern River Preserve, California, in July 2004.

HOOKED ON HUMMINGBIRDS video

Buy HOOKED ON HUMMINGBIRDS and support Idaho Hummingbird Banding Research!

A friend of mine from California, Tom Kaminski and his Avian Video Center, has produced a 53 minute hummingbird video that is top rate! This very educational and entertaining video is geared toward active hummingbird-folks and leisure backyard birders alike. You will love it!

So far I've showed this video to three bird clubs in southern Idaho (Southwestern Idaho Birders Association, Portneuf Audubon, Snake River Audubon) and the video has received rave reviews.

Noted birder, author, and naturalist, Kenn Kaufman calls this "a fantastic video" among other accolades.

Other hummingbird experts note that this video has all the "fun stuff" in it! This video has been reviewed for content by several hummingbird banders, myself included, and we think it's one of the best out there, not only in terms of photography (which is great), but also in terms of accurate and informative narration.

As the jacket says, "Spectacular, close-up footage in slow motion, stop motion, and real time shows hummers flying, feeding, fighting, and nesting as you've never before seen them. You'll be treated to the amazing sights of hummers building their nests, feeding their chicks and defending their territories in ways the naked eye can't see. Shot in the U.S. and Costa Rica, this award-winning program also unveils the secrets of hummingbird aerobatics -- including upside-down flight -- as well as their roles as "closet carnivores," nectar robbers, and house-keeping fuss-budgets. You'll watch the incredibly delicate task of placing a band on one of the world's tiniest avian "ankles" -- that of a hummingbird. This entertaining and educational documentary shows 20 hummingbird species, as well as American Kestrel, woodpeckers, wrens and other predators."

This is definitely a video you'll want to share with your friends and family!

Some of my personal photos were used for the video jacket cover, as well as some of the close-up illustrations in the video. Tom also had several hummingbird banders review early releases of the video for accuracy. The result is a very informative video that every hummingbird-lover should own and watch regularly!
